The exploitation of public office for personal gain is characteristic of the far-right. Hitler renounced his salary but amassed millions in bribes and government-mandated purchases of Mein Kampf. Trump refused his salary but made millions from foreign business deals while in office. Positions of power are used to funnel money through secret deals and personal connections, eroding our trust and hollowing out our democratic institutions.
